In this review, the latest research progresses about hydrogels in recent years were summarized, mainly including the preparation methods of hydrogels and their antibacterial applications. Antimicrobial hydrogels, composed of hydrated polymeric networks capable of destroying pathogenic microbes, find applications in various pharmaceutical products such as medicines, sanitation products, disinfecting agents, and other household hygiene items. In this review article, a number of promising strategies in the development of hydrogels with biocidal properties, particularly those originating from natural polymers, are briefly summarized and concisely discussed.
